World Gone Mad

Background

World Gone Mad is a song written and sung by Tony Kortez. Although this song was written a few years ago, its first public release was in October 2014 through this music video. It is one of the songs from the soon to be released album called World Gone Mad, of which two other songs have also been released, these being: Great to be Alive (Koretz & Millar, 2012) and The Long Locked Door (Koretz, 2014). This music video was created as part of a third year Screen and Media assignment for the University of Waikato, New Zealand.

Genre

The genre of the song World Gone Mad is a conspiracy documentary rock music video. It is a documentary in as much as the quotes being used are from reliable sources, but since these quotes lack context and the meanings created through video editing are the director’s opinion; there is subsequently a conjectural perspective. It is the intention of the director that this music video makes people aware of these issues and hopefully they are motivated enough to conduct their own research. The documentary modes used in the music video; as defined by Bill Nichols (Nichols, 2001), are the 'expository mode' and the 'poetic mode'. It is expository in that there is a narration and on screen text and poetic because of the song, along with the display and manipulation of visual elements.

Content

The meaning of the word ‘Mad’ as used in the title of the music video World Gone Mad is not a madness that comes as the result of living in Fredric Nietzsche’s meaningless world, as told in the Parable of the Madman (Nietzshe, 1882), which says that the human race is “straying, as through the infinite nothing”, but rather it is the actions of madness by people who are being manipulated by unseen powers. This madness is seen in the unnecessary chaos that people experience through no fault of their own. This music video suggests that the Illuminati with its control of banks and politics are using this power for their own evil ends.

The video has three main sequences; the tunnels, the yellow smoke and the black and white tint. The underground tunnels and chambers represents the hidden nature of the Illuminati, in the same way tunnels are hidden from the public eye; the yellow smoke represents the way that Illuminati are using a smokescreen to hide what methods they are using to create this chaos in the world; and the black and white tinted images represents the chaos in the world through the eyes of popular news media. This lack of colour in these images suggests that what we see through the media lacks depth and meaning as to the real cause behind these events. It is in these images where the world's madness is mainly observed.

Audience

The expected audience for this music video (outside of those only interested in it for the music) are conspiracists, Christian end time watchers, those people who are anti-'New World Order' or anti-Illuminati and those who are looking for news regarding current events and watching out for future news regarding the world and where it's heading.
