Introduction

Screen and Media Studies 312 VP3

Paper

This is a video assignment for a third year paper at the University of Waikato. The paper is called SMST312-14B Video_Production 3. The assignment brief is shown below:

Getting Started

I thought I would use this assignment to make a music video for my friend Tony Koretz who has recently written a rock song called "World Gone Mad". Earlier this year I told him I would like to make a music video for this song. When I was given this assignment from the University I saw it as a great opportunity to make this video in a timely manner, while at the same time get a lot of valuable feedback during the process. The pages for the process are found on the side menu.

Assignment Brief:

Assignment Two

The object of the second assignment is to create an approximately four to five minute audio-visual work that has a strong investment in After Effects as a postproduction tool and which can be of any genre fictional or non-fictional. There needs to be a strong and conscious investment in the structuring of space/time elements in the film, innovative transitions will be a priority, as well as an awareness of lighting strategies, pacing, utilisation of text and the title and credit sequences must be appropriate for the nature and style of the video work. The soundscape must be original.

The work will be presented in class through the blog and it will be expected that the student directors will discuss their work – its strengths and weaknesses.

MARK: AV sequence (4-5 minutes) 30%
Engagement with rough draft critique: 10%
Date Due: Friday 3rd October 2014

AV work to be handed to lecturer at the lecture and these will be returned at the lecturer after the completion of assessment.

Assignment Three

This can either be a continued finessing of the second assignment or else a completely different but certainly innovative video work that continues to support the emphasis on compositional strategies as suggested by Manovich’s essay on After Effects. The soundscape must be original. Assignment two and three must be presented on a DVD organised with a menu utilising Studio Pro or Encoore. The DVD to have a printed cover and printed disc that is appropriate to the style of the projects.
MARK: AV sequence 20% of final grade
Date Due: Friday 24th October 2014
